Serving with a Story Ministry This Summer

The last mission trip I went on with my home church was about two years ago. Growing up, I had never really connected with the other girls at this church; I thought of them as untouchable, at once close and never really in reach. For years it had been this way—until, one hot night in the Dominican Republic, in a small group meeting after a sermon, one of these girls asked if she could share her testimony.

That night, I listened as this person, someone I had observed for nearly a decade but had never truly understood, unfolded for us the story God had written with her—the intimate details of pain, shortcomings, and the mercy of our Savior. And she was just the first; every evening after, another girl would be emboldened to share her testimony as well. Over a few nights, we accomplished what years of surface communication had never been able to: love. I laughed, wept, and became overjoyed for women that had moments before been strangers—and in turn, they did the same for me.

Moments like this are why I love stories, and I know I’m not the only one who believes in their importance. This summer, I have the opportunity to serve as a Story Ministry Resident with The 3:15 Project in Atlanta. In my role, I’ll be learning and serving, helping others discover and share their stories through story formation, writing, music, and video. I’ll also support production, work collaboratively, and help create resources that equip other ministries to become stewards of stories.

I am hoping to raise $1,000 in missional support by May 15th, which The 3:15 Project will match as an honorarium for the work I’ll be doing this summer.
